In the summer evening of July 29, 2021, a dispute over a speeding car on a residential street in Anderson, Indiana, tragically cut short the life of 35-year-old Christian Michael Cox. The white male was a manager at a local Tire Barn and was known as an outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing, camping, and boating.
The incident unfolded on the 1600 block of West 9th Street. Cox, along with his girlfriend, was outside when a car drove by at a high rate of speed.
Concern for a child on the sidewalk prompted them to shout at the driver to slow down. The car initially left the scene but returned a short time later, leading to a heated confrontation between Cox and the driver, 18-year-old Aundray Lamonte Ivy Jr. The argument escalated, and Ivy fired multiple shots, striking Cox. Emergency services were called, and Cox was transported to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Witnesses at the scene provided a description of the shooter and the vehicle, which led to the quick apprehension of Ivy by the Anderson Police Department. He was taken into custody a short time after the shooting and was subsequently charged with murder.
The case proceeded through the legal system, but before it could reach a trial, the Madison County Prosecutor's Office re-evaluated the evidence. After conducting further interviews and reviewing the state's self-defense laws, prosecutors determined they could not disprove Ivy's claim of self-defense beyond a reasonable doubt. Consequently, the murder charge against Aundray Lamonte Ivy Jr. was dismissed. Instead, Ivy pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of criminal recklessness. He was sentenced to 18 months in jail, with credit for time already served since his arrest.
