In the early morning hours of July 31, 2021, a fatal encounter in an Indianapolis apartment complex parking lot cut short the life of 24-year-old Kane Lemeul Baca. A male, Baca and his girlfriend were in her apartment when Corey Mirabal arrived at the front door. Baca went outside to speak with Mirabal, and shortly after, the sound of multiple gunshots pierced the quiet of the morning.
Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers responded to a report of a person shot on Coquina
Key Drive on the city's west side. Upon arrival, they discovered Baca in the parking lot, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite his critical injuries, Baca was able to communicate with the officers before he succumbed to his injuries, identifying Corey Mirabal as the person who had shot him.
Following the information provided by Baca and his girlfriend, law enforcement located and arrested Mirabal. Mirabal's probation officer assisted detectives from the IMPD's Violent Crime Unit by providing his address. Subsequently, Corey Mirabal was charged with murder. After a three-day jury trial, he was convicted of murder for the shooting death of Kane Baca.
