In the early morning hours of a November day in Indianapolis, a grim discovery was made in a wooded area on the city's east side. A person in the vicinity of the 5200 block of Butler Terrace directed police to the location where the body of a man was found around 1 a.m. The man, later identified as 33-year-old Dana Smith, had been shot. Medics arrived at the scene but were unable to save him, and he was pronounced dead. The Marion County Coroner's office later ruled his death a homicide.
