A graduate of Butler University and a retail store manager, he was also a passionate athlete who competed as number 47 for the Race City Rebels, an amateur men's roller derby team.
That Monday night had been a typical one for him; he attended a grueling practice session with his teammates, who would later recall his high energy and positive spirit on the track. After practice concluded around 9:00 p.m., he stopped at a Kroger grocery store before driving to his home at the Southport Crossing Apartments on the south side of the city.
Upon arriving at his apartment complex around 10:00 p.m., he parked his silver sedan but did not immediately go inside. Exhausted from his workout, he sat in his vehicle for approximately twenty minutes, posting a final message to Facebook describing how tired and sore his legs were. When he finally exited the car, carrying his gym bag and groceries, he was approached by an unknown individual or group in the parking lot. Investigators believe a confrontation occurred near his vehicle, where his grocery bags and gym duffel were later found neatly placed on the ground rather than scattered, suggesting he may have been ordered to set them down.
Residents in the complex reported hearing a series of loud pops around 10:03 p.m., but many dismissed the sounds as fireworks or a car backfiring, and responding officers found nothing amiss during an initial patrol of the dark area. It was not until the following day, just before noon on May 2, that a group of teenagers fishing near a creek behind the apartment buildings stumbled upon a body hidden in the woods. Authorities identified the victim as Walden, confirming he had been shot multiple times and had died from his injuries.
