In the quiet Bayswater at Eagle Creek subdivision on the northwest side of Indianapolis, the afternoon of September 30, 2025, was shattered by violence that claimed the life of 38-year-old William E. Deaton II. A White / Caucasian male, Deaton was found by Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers outside a residence in the 5200 block of Austral Drive, suffering from gunshot wounds.
Medics pronounced him dead at the scene, turning a tranquil suburban street into a crime scene under a gray autumn sky.
The investigation into Deaton's death revealed a story of a man who died coming to the aid of another. According to court documents, the tragic events began with a confrontation between a woman and 17-year-old Emmanuel Awobiyi. The situation escalated, and Awobiyi allegedly pointed a gun at the woman, causing her to scream for help and call Deaton. When Deaton arrived to intervene, Awobiyi is accused of firing several shots, fatally wounding him. Witnesses reported that the suspect fled the scene on foot, possibly using the nearby trail systems, just before police arrived.
For weeks, the suspect remained at large, with detectives canvassing the area for evidence, reviewing surveillance footage, and appealing to the public for information. The breakthrough in the case came on Monday, October 20, when IMPD detectives, who had obtained a search warrant for a home on Stanhope Way near the shooting scene, observed Awobiyi entering the residence. He was taken into custody and, after being questioned by detectives, was arrested and subsequently charged with murder. His initial hearing was held on Thursday, October 23. The senseless act of violence left a community in shock and a family to grieve the loss of a man who was remembered as caring, compassionate, and loving.
