In the early hours of an autumn Sunday, the life of a beloved Indianapolis woman was tragically cut short in what should have been the safety of her own home. Antonia 'Toni' Macri-Reiner, a 69-year-old female, was shot and killed on October 10, 2021, during a suspected break-in at her residence on the 1200 block of Windsor Street. Friends and family remembered her as a kind-hearted and social individual, a hypnotherapist who had enthusiastically immersed herself in her neighborhood's activities
since moving there two years prior. She was a proud grandmother with a new grandbaby on the way, who loved her grandchildren dearly.
The incident that led to her untimely death is believed to have been a home invasion. A petition filed in juvenile court alleges that a 13-year-old boy broke into the home Macri-Reiner shared with her husband with the intent to steal car keys and their vehicle. This act tragically escalated, resulting in Macri-Reiner being shot multiple times. First responders found her critically injured and rushed her to a nearby hospital, but she was pronounced dead shortly after her arrival. The profound loss was deeply felt by her loved ones, with her daughter describing her mother as having 'everything to live for' and expressing disbelief that her time had come in such a violent manner.
In the hours following the shooting, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department homicide detectives were able to identify and arrest a suspect. A 13-year-old male juvenile was taken into custody for his alleged involvement in the crime. The Marion County Prosecutor's Office subsequently charged the teen with murder and burglary. Given the severity of the alleged offenses, the prosecutor's office also filed a waiver to have the case moved from the juvenile court system to adult court, a decision that Macri-Reiner's daughter expressed hope a judge would approve. The community and her family were left to grapple with the senselessness of the act, with her daughter calling for community leaders and outreach programs to intervene with at-risk youth to prevent similar tragedies.
