In the summer of 2021, the life of 25-year-old Hayley Merrill was tragically cut short in Indianapolis, Indiana. On the night of August 1, Merrill and a companion, 26-year-old Adam Deavers, were discovered inside a vehicle that had crashed into a tree on East 35th Street. Authorities from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department responded to reports of shots fired in the area and found both Merrill and Deavers suffering from gunshot wounds.
The initial investigation into the
double homicide pointed towards a possible robbery motive. As detectives delved deeper into the case, ballistic testing of the evidence from the scene would eventually lead them to a prime suspect. The firearm used in the killings of Merrill and Deavers was connected to 33-year-old James Williams. Investigators learned that this same weapon was also linked to at least one other homicide, a non-fatal shooting, and a hit-and-run incident involving gunfire from June of the previous year.
The pursuit of justice for Hayley Merrill and Adam Deavers took a dramatic turn on September 1, 2021. While attempting to apprehend James Williams, IMPD officers were confronted by the suspect, who pointed a firearm at them. In the ensuing confrontation, Williams was fatally shot by the police. The handgun recovered from Williams was confirmed to be the same weapon used in the murders of Merrill and Deavers, closing the investigation into their deaths.
