In November 2021, the community of Indianapolis, Indiana, was shaken by the grim discovery of a slain African American male named Ail Lee Smith, Jr. The 47-year-old, known to friends and family as A.J., was found dead under harrowing circumstances in the early morning hours of November 9. Fire crews and police officers had responded to a report of a vehicle fire in the 7500 block of Woodlawn Avenue, a secluded area on the city's east side near the intersection of Brookville Road and Shadeland
Avenue. Upon extinguishing the flames, first responders opened the trunk of the car and discovered Smith’s body inside.
A subsequent investigation by the Marion County Coroner’s Office determined that the cause of death was a gunshot wound to the head, ruling the case a homicide. For years, the case went cold as detectives struggled to identify those responsible for the brutal killing. Despite executing multiple search warrants and conducting numerous interviews, the investigation reached a standstill, leaving Smith's family without answers for nearly four years. It was not until witnesses provided crucial new information that authorities were able to break the silence surrounding the events of that night.
In July 2025, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department announced a significant breakthrough with the arrest of two suspects. Investigators alleged that Anthony Porter committed the murder, serving him with a preliminary charge while he was already in federal custody for an unrelated incident. Authorities also arrested a second individual, identified as Christopher Hall, who faced a preliminary charge of assisting a criminal. The arrests brought a measure of resolution to a long-standing investigation, though formal charges were still being finalized by the prosecutor's office at the time of the announcement.
