In the early hours of May 8, 2021, the life of 23-year-old Malik Asante Parks was tragically cut short in Indianapolis, Indiana. A Black male, Parks was ambushed and fatally shot as he was leaving a woman's apartment at the Lake Castleton Apartments on the city's northeast side just before dawn. His family believes he was targeted, possibly followed after a night out celebrating a birthday.
The shooting marked the 88th homicide in Indianapolis for that year.
Malik, born on January 30, 1998, in Terre Haute, was a graduate of Ben Davis High School and had attended Vincennes University. He was remembered by loved ones for his vibrant personality, his love for playing video games, basketball, dancing, and rapping. He was also a caring family member who enjoyed helping his mother with his niece and nephew.
In the wake of his death, family and friends gathered to mourn and release balloons in his memory, expressing their frustration over the increasing gun violence in their community. They emphasized that Malik was more than just a statistic. As of the latest available information, the investigation into Malik Asante Parks' murder remains ongoing. No arrests have been made, and no suspects have been publicly identified. The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department continues to seek leads to bring those responsible for his death to justice.
