In the spring of 2025, a life was tragically cut short on the near-northwest side of Indianapolis. On the afternoon of April 2nd, 18-year-old Jaiden Gardfrey, a Black male, was fatally shot in a residential neighborhood. The incident, which occurred around 4:40 p.m. in the 900 block of West 32nd Street, stemmed from an ongoing dispute. After being shot, Gardfrey sought help from multiple houses before collapsing inside a residence where he was let in.
He was pronounced dead at the scene from a single gunshot wound to the chest.
The investigation into Gardfrey's death quickly pointed to a suspect. The following day, on April 3, 2025, 19-year-old Izayah Holland was arrested by Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department detectives and SWAT officers in connection with the shooting. The conflict between Gardfrey and Holland reportedly arose from a dispute over a relationship with a 16-year-old girl, as well as previous arguments from their time in school. Prior to the shooting, Holland had allegedly sent threatening voice messages to the mother of Gardfrey's 8-month-old child.
According to court documents, Holland went to the residence where Gardfrey was, approached a bedroom window from the outside, and shot him once in the chest. Holland allegedly attempted to fire a second shot, but his weapon malfunctioned. During questioning, Holland claimed that Gardfrey had pointed a gun at him first. However, witnesses maintained that Gardfrey was unarmed during the incident. An Instagram message allegedly sent by Holland after the shooting stated, in part, 'I shot when I see him have no gun I didn't shoot anymore.' Holland is facing preliminary murder charges, with the Marion County Prosecutor's Office set to make the final charging decision.
Jaiden Gardfrey was a student and basketball player at Indianapolis Metropolitan High School. Remembered as a father to two young sons, an 8-month-old and a 3-month-old, his mother shared that he was excited about being a young father and wanted to build a future for his boys.
