In the spring of 1983, a young man's life was tragically cut short, leaving a lasting mark on the community of Indianapolis. Daniel Scott McNeive, a 21-year-old white male, was last known to be living at 343 S. Lyons Avenue in Indianapolis and was employed at Cardinal Construction. His life, however, would become intertwined with the horrific crimes of a notorious serial killer.
On May 7, 1983, McNeive's body was discovered in a field in Belleville, located in Hendricks County, Indiana.
The location was approximately a quarter of a mile south of Interstate 70 and 641 feet east of State Road 39. This discovery would eventually link his murder to a series of other gruesome killings that had been terrorizing the Midwest.
Investigators ultimately identified Larry Eyler, known as 'The Interstate Killer,' as the man responsible for Daniel McNeive's death. Eyler was a serial killer who targeted young men and boys between 1982 and 1984, with his victims often found near interstate highways. The investigation into Eyler’s crimes revealed a disturbing pattern of torture and murder.
Larry Eyler was eventually apprehended and convicted for the murder of 21 individuals, though he was suspected of killing at least 20 more. His conviction for the torture and dismemberment of 15-year-old Daniel Bridges was a key piece of evidence that connected him to a multitude of other murders, including that of Daniel McNeive. Eyler was sentenced to death by lethal injection for his horrific crimes. However, he would not face execution, as he died in 1994 from AIDS-related complications while on death row.
