In the early morning hours of April 23, 2025, the life of 26-year-old Darius Timberlake was tragically cut short in a quiet neighborhood in Lawrence, Indianapolis. Responding to a report of a shooting at a residence in the 4500 block of Vernon Avenue around 3:30 a.m., Lawrence Police Department officers discovered Timberlake suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite the efforts of medics who arrived shortly after, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Marion County Coroner's Office later officially identified the victim, ruling his death a homicide.
Initial reports indicated that a person of interest had been detained for questioning at the scene. As the investigation progressed, details emerged suggesting the shooting was a crime of passion. The detained individual was identified as 19-year-old Jeremy Jett. According to prosecutors, the incident was fueled by jealousy when Jett arrived at his girlfriend's home to find her in bed with Timberlake.
Court documents revealed a tense confrontation between the two men. Jett's girlfriend told police that he was 'jealous' and that the shooting was not an accident. It is alleged that Jett pulled a gun on Timberlake, leading to a struggle over the weapon before Jett fired the fatal shots. In the immediate aftermath, Jett reportedly waited over half an hour before calling 911, initially claiming the shooting was accidental.
Just over two months after the fatal shooting, Jeremy Jett was formally charged with the murder of Darius Timberlake and one count of residential entry. An investigation into Jett's social media activity reportedly uncovered a message to a friend in which he allegedly planned to claim self-defense. Jett is being held without bond at the Marion County Jail and was scheduled for a court appearance in early July.
