In September 2022, a violent altercation erupted at a gas station in Cumberland, Indiana, claiming the life of 29-year-old Black male Daeshua Lamont Reese. The incident occurred on the evening of Wednesday, September 21, outside a Speedway convenience store located near the intersection of East 10th Street and German Church Road. Authorities were dispatched to the scene shortly after 7:10 p.m.
following reports of gunfire in the parking lot.
Upon arrival, first responders discovered that three individuals had been struck by bullets during the chaos. Reese, a father and respiratory therapist employed at St. Vincent Hospital, sustained critical injuries and was transported to a local hospital where he later died. The other two victims were also hospitalized, with one reportedly transported in a private vehicle. Investigators at the scene believed that a physical fight may have precipitated the shooting, which sent bystanders and store patrons scrambling for cover, some hiding in a freezer for safety.
In the aftermath of the shooting, Cumberland police detained multiple individuals for questioning. While initial reports indicated that no immediate charges were filed specifically for Reese's death, legal proceedings later identified Devin Murrell, 28, as a suspect involved in the violence. Murrell was charged with two counts of battery by means of a deadly weapon and one count of criminal recklessness in connection with the shooting incident that ultimately ended Reese's life.
