In the early morning hours of April 17, 2022, Jamear Powell, a 19-year-old Black male from Indianapolis, Indiana, was fatally shot. The incident unfolded at Pollos Los Reyes, a business located in the 2800 block of South Madison Avenue. Powell was later discovered with gunshot wounds in the parking lot of a nearby Popeyes restaurant. He was transported to a hospital in critical condition but ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
The shooting that claimed Powell's life was part of a
violent weekend in the city, and he was not the only victim of this particular event. Two other individuals were also injured in the same incident and later arrived at Eskenazi Hospital for medical treatment. Investigators believe the shootings were related, though a clear motive has not been publicly identified.
During the investigation, it came to light that the business where the incident originated, Pollos Los Reyes, was operating without the necessary food and entertainment licenses, although it did possess a liquor license. This discovery led to increased scrutiny from state and local agencies, with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department requesting inspections that could have led to the establishment's closure.
