In the quiet community of South Bend, Indiana, the life of 52-year-old Marinea C. Erp came to a violent and tragic end on April 9, 2022. A passerby discovered her on the side of Chippewa Avenue, bleeding and in distress, initially appearing to have a seizure. Emergency services were called, but she succumbed to her injuries after being transported to the hospital.
An autopsy later revealed the grim truth: Marinea had died from multiple gunshot wounds, turning a medical emergency into a homicide investigation.
As the St. Joseph County Police delved into the case, the initial hours were fraught with uncertainty, with no immediate suspects or clear motive. The breakthrough came from a crucial piece of evidence: surveillance footage from the area. The video captured a brown Volvo pulling over to the side of the road. A figure emerged from the driver's side, walked around to the passenger side, and then the distinct sound of several gunshots pierced the air. The individual then got back into the car and drove away. This footage was instrumental in identifying the vehicle and setting investigators on the path to a suspect.
The investigation quickly zeroed in on a person of interest, William Dean Merriweather, described as a friend of Erp's. Detectives discovered that Erp drove a brown Volvo, and phone records confirmed that Merriweather was one of the last people to be in contact with her before her death. A text message from Erp to a third party just hours before she was killed mentioned plans to purchase drugs with someone and a determination not to let that person take her money again.
Further surveillance video from the Miami Hills apartment complex, recorded just minutes after the gunshots, showed Erp's vehicle pulling into the parking lot. A man, later identified as Merriweather, was seen getting out of the car and wiping down parts of it. Several people who viewed stills from this video identified the man as Merriweather. When questioned by police on April 19, Merriweather initially denied being with Erp on the day of her murder, claiming he was supposed to meet her to buy drugs but never did. He also denied ever driving her vehicle. However, he eventually admitted to being the person in the surveillance video. Another witness told investigators that Merriweather had given him the keys to the Volvo and $100, instructing him to buy drugs from a specific dealer, leave the car at that location, and get a ride home.
Based on the compelling evidence gathered, William Dean Merriweather was arrested and charged with one count of murder and a firearm sentencing enhancement in connection with the death of Marinea C. Erp. The case against him is ongoing as the community awaits justice for a life cut short.
