The joyous occasion turned tragic when a drive-by shooting erupted. Chrisyah was the only person struck by the gunfire. She was rushed to a nearby hospital but succumbed to her injuries. Her father, Christopher Stephens, described her as the 'sweetest girl you could ever meet' and lamented that an innocent birthday party would be her last.
The investigation into her death led authorities to 18-year-old Jaheim Lamar Campbell. He was arrested on October 15, 2020, and subsequently charged with Chrisyah's murder. Investigators believed the shooting was not a random act of violence. The intended target was reportedly an individual named Sebastian Hines, also known as 'SB Nasty'. According to charging documents, Campbell had allegedly been feuding with Hines and had created a Facebook account with the intent of intimidating him. It is believed that after the shooting, when Campbell learned a child had been shot, he expressed that he was not yet satisfied.
During the trial, the prosecution presented evidence suggesting Campbell was responsible for the shooting, arguing that he was targeting 'SB Nasty' over a personal dispute. They pointed to the Facebook account they alleged Campbell created to threaten his intended victim. The defense, however, offered a different narrative. They claimed Campbell was not the shooter and that another individual, who went by the moniker 'Taliban Tukka,' was responsible. The defense further argued that Campbell had been coerced into making contradictory statements to detectives.
After deliberating for over seven hours in August 2021, the jury reached a verdict. Jaheim Campbell was found not guilty of the murder of Chrisyah Stephens.
