On December 10, 2023, the life of Zawondra Trinnette Lee, a 52-year-old African American woman, was tragically cut short inside a residence in South Bend, Indiana. Born and raised in the area, Zawondra was known to her family and community as a graduate of Washington High School and a dedicated certified surgical technician who had attended Ivy Tech College.
On that fateful Sunday night, police officers were dispatched to a home in the 3900 block of Ardmore Trail just before midnight after receiving a distressing call reporting a domestic shooting.
The events leading to the violence reportedly stemmed from a verbal dispute between Zawondra and her 68-year-old mother, Shirley Lee, with whom she had been living for several months. According to court documents, the argument escalated when Shirley, feeling overwhelmed by the confrontation, retreated to her bedroom and shut the door in her daughter's face multiple times in an attempt to distance herself. When Shirley opened the door again and felt that Zawondra was continuing to speak, she allegedly became enraged, retrieved a handgun, and fired multiple shots at her daughter. Investigators later noted that Zawondra was unarmed during the encounter.
Upon arriving at the scene, law enforcement officers found Shirley Lee sitting inside the home. She was taken into custody immediately and reportedly made spontaneous admissions to the officers, stating that her daughter was shot and inside the residence. Police discovered Zawondra’s body lying on the floor with a silver revolver nearby. During questioning, Shirley allegedly confessed to the shooting, telling detectives that she had acted out of anger because her daughter would not stop talking.
Following the investigation, prosecutors from the St. Joseph County Prosecutor's Office formally charged Shirley Lee with murder and voluntary manslaughter, a Level 2 felony, along with a sentencing enhancement for the use of a firearm. The voluntary manslaughter charge was included to address the claim that the killing occurred under sudden heat. Shirley was ordered to be held without bond at the St. Joseph County Jail as she awaited further legal proceedings.
