In a tragic turn of events that compounded a family's grief, Kaylynn Davidson, a 32-year-old female from South Bend, Indiana, was fatally shot on May 17, 2022. This incident occurred just five days after she had buried her five-year-old son, Kyler, who died from an accidental gunshot wound.
The circumstances leading to Davidson's death began with a physical altercation at the Linden Grill in downtown South Bend.
Surveillance footage from the restaurant showed Davidson approaching and striking 26-year-old Kimarie Wright. The two women engaged in a fight that was broken up by others present. Following the initial scuffle, as Davidson and others were attempting to leave the restaurant, Wright produced a handgun.
As Davidson and the others fled the establishment, Wright followed them to the exit and fired multiple shots. Davidson was struck by the gunfire and was transported to a local hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries. The South Bend Police arrived at the scene around 9:40 p.m. and found Wright still inside the restaurant with a handgun.
Kimarie Wright was arrested in connection with the shooting and was subsequently charged with murder and voluntary manslaughter. Prosecutors argued that despite the initial physical altercation started by Davidson, there was no imminent threat to Wright that would justify the use of deadly force. In November 2023, a jury found Wright guilty of voluntary manslaughter, and the murder charge was dismissed. She was sentenced to 10 years in prison for her role in the death of Kaylynn Davidson.
