In the cold of a March morning in South Bend, Indiana, a passerby noticed a young child walking barefoot, clutching an infant. This brave 8-year-old was seeking help for her mother, 33-year-old Kenyatta McCurry, a Black female who lay dead inside their home on South Michigan Street from a single gunshot wound. At the time of her death, McCurry was three months pregnant with what would have been her fifth child.
The investigation into her death quickly focused on Gregory Jones, who was
identified as McCurry's boyfriend and the father of her one-year-old child. Initially, Jones denied being at McCurry's home on the day of the murder, claiming he was with his girlfriend, Tiaira Miller. However, his story soon changed. He admitted to being at the residence but claimed McCurry was alive when he left after retrieving $5,000 he had hidden there. Jones gave this money to Miller and instructed her to provide him with a false alibi.
The narrative provided by McCurry's 8-year-old daughter was crucial for investigators. She told police that Jones had called her mother into the bedroom before he left the house. After he was gone, the child entered the bedroom to find her mother bloody on the bed. This eyewitness account, combined with inconsistencies in Jones's statements and his girlfriend's eventual admission that he was not with her at the time of the murder, led to his arrest.
Gregory Jones was charged with one count of murder in the death of Kenyatta McCurry. His girlfriend, Tiaira Miller, was also arrested and charged with assisting a criminal for her role in attempting to mislead the police. In May 2018, a jury found Gregory Jones guilty of murdering the pregnant mother of four. Following his conviction, he faced a sentence of 45 to 65 years in prison.
