In the early hours of a summer morning in South Bend, Indiana, the life of 28-year-old Jasmine Swanson was tragically cut short. On June 20, 2024, police responded to a call of shots fired on Parry Street. Arriving at the scene, officers discovered Jasmine Swanson with a gunshot wound; she was later pronounced dead. Two other women were also injured in the shooting but survived.
Jasmine, a beloved mother to her son, Jayceon Austin, was remembered for her infectious smile and boundless
energy. She was a dedicated employee at Amazon and was cherished by a large and loving family, including her parents, Donald T. Swanson and Crystal L. Jefferies, and numerous siblings. Her friends recall her love for dancing and music, and a zest for life that touched everyone she knew. Her family and friends gathered to celebrate her life and mourn her passing at a funeral service held on June 28, 2024.
The investigation into the shooting quickly led to a suspect, 22-year-old Rya Barnes. Barnes was arrested the same day as the shooting and subsequently charged with one count of murder, two counts of battery by means of a deadly weapon, and two counts of criminal recklessness. The motive for the shooting is believed to have stemmed from an argument that originated on social media.
After a five-day trial, a jury found Rya Barnes guilty on all counts. Prosecutors presented evidence, including video footage that reportedly contradicted Barnes' denial of firing a weapon. Her sentencing was scheduled for January 16, 2026, bringing a measure of closure to a case that began with a senseless act of violence and ended with the promise of justice for Jasmine Swanson and her grieving family.
