In the winter of 2023, the life of 46-year-old Rachel Ann Havrick was tragically cut short in her own South Bend, Indiana, home. On the night of January 2nd, police were dispatched to her residence on Ashland Avenue shortly before 11:30 p.m. following reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered Rachel suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Despite the immediate response, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into the death of the female victim, a dedicated human services professional known for her giving heart and creative soul, quickly transitioned into a homicide case. Details emerged that on the evening of the incident, two masked men entered her home and demanded she open a safe that contained several weapons. When Rachel was unable to open the safe, one of the intruders pistol-whipped her before fatally shooting her. Her juvenile son and daughter were present in the home at the time of the horrifying event.
Within a short period, the South Bend Police Department's Violent Crimes Unit identified and arrested three individuals in connection with the murder. The suspects were 25-year-old Ddrea Bostic, 20-year-old Devon Briggs, and 30-year-old Erica Elie. The investigation revealed that Bostic, who was dating Rachel's adult daughter, had been at the house earlier that day and was aware of the safe and its contents. It was alleged that Elie drove Bostic and Briggs to Rachel's home, where Bostic and Briggs then entered with the intent to rob her of the firearms.
The legal process that followed brought a series of charges against the three suspects. Bostic and Briggs faced charges including murder, felony murder, burglary, and robbery. Erica Elie was charged with assisting a criminal. In February 2024, D'Drea Bostic pleaded guilty to murder as part of a plea agreement and was subsequently sentenced to a total of 105 years in the Indiana Department of Corrections. Erica Elie also reached a plea agreement and was sentenced to 17 and a half years for her role in the crime. Devon Briggs pleaded guilty as well and was awaiting sentencing for his involvement in the tragic death of Rachel Ann Havrick.
