In the late summer of 2022, the life of 18-year-old Rainie Best was tragically cut short in a South Bend, Indiana, home. On August 9th, police were dispatched to a residence on Johnson Street where they made a grim discovery. Inside, they found the bodies of Rainie, a female, and 24-year-old Phil Honer. Both had sustained fatal gunshot wounds, and an autopsy would later confirm that these injuries were the cause of their deaths, with Rainie having been shot in the head and back.
The case was immediately investigated as a double homicide.
As the South Bend Police Department's Violent Crimes Unit delved into the circumstances surrounding the deaths, their investigation led them to a suspect. Through an examination of Rainie's cellphone, investigators found communications that pointed them toward 52-year-old Joseph Newgent of South Bend. When questioned by detectives, Newgent admitted to being at the house on August 4th, five days before the bodies were discovered. He recounted hearing an argument between Rainie and Phil that escalated into a physical altercation.
According to Newgent's statement to the police, he intervened in the fight by pulling out his gun and firing in Honer's direction. He claimed that while he intended to shoot Honer, he also shot Best inadvertently. Following his admission, Joseph Newgent was arrested and charged with two counts of murder and a firearm enhancement. He is currently being held at the St. Joseph County Jail as he awaits trial for the deaths of Rainie Best and Phil Honer.
