In the autumn of 2021, a tragic event unfolded in South Bend, Indiana, that cut short the life of 19-year-old Ashanti Hines. On the evening of October 13th, the young woman was seated in a parked car on Yukon Street when gunfire suddenly erupted. Struck by the bullets, Hines succumbed to her injuries in what would later be described by authorities as a senseless act of violence where she was not the intended victim.
The actual target, a male companion in the vehicle with her, was the focus of the assailants' aggression.
The investigation into the shooting led police to identify Quadir Quiroz as a primary suspect. Three days after the fatal shooting, while executing a warrant for his arrest on unrelated matters, law enforcement discovered a firearm at a residence where Quiroz was located. Forensic analysis confirmed that the casings from this weapon matched those recovered from the scene of Ashanti Hines' murder. Further strengthening the case against him, DNA evidence found on the grip of the gun was overwhelmingly linked to Quiroz. Adding to the physical evidence, witness testimony also implicated him and another individual in the shooting, with some witnesses stating that Quiroz and his accomplice had admitted to shooting at the intended male target but had tragically killed Hines instead.
Following a thorough investigation, Quadir Quiroz was charged with the murder of Ashanti Hines. In August 2024, a jury found him guilty of murder and a firearm enhancement. The legal proceedings brought to light the harrowing details of that October night and the devastating consequences of the misplaced gunfire. In a subsequent and separate case, Quiroz also pleaded guilty to robbery in connection with the death of another individual, Sa'Sha Agnew, which occurred just two days after Hines was killed. On October 4, 2024, for his series of violent crimes, including the murder of Ashanti Hines, Quadir Quiroz was sentenced to a term of 100 years in the Indiana Department of Corrections, bringing a measure of closure to a case that had deeply affected the South Bend community.
