On the morning of August 3, 2022, a fatal shooting occurred on the far east side of Indianapolis, Indiana, resulting in the death of 16-year-old Armohni Preswood. Officers from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department were dispatched to a residence in the 11000 block of Tapp Drive, located near the intersection of North Cumberland Road and 10th Street in the Cumberland area. The call was received around 4:15 a.m. regarding a report of a person shot.
Upon arrival, first responders discovered the male teenager suffering from gunshot wounds in the driveway of a home. He was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical personnel.
The investigation revealed that the incident stemmed from an apparent attempted robbery. According to detectives, a young woman and her boyfriend were sitting in a vehicle parked in the driveway when they were approached by multiple individuals. Witnesses and the occupants of the vehicle reported that at least one of the approaching subjects was armed with a gun. During the confrontation, shots were fired by the occupants of the vehicle, striking Preswood. Following the shooting, the other individuals involved in the alleged robbery attempt fled the scene before police arrived.
Law enforcement detained the individuals who fired the shots for questioning. After a preliminary review of the evidence and witness statements, investigators determined that the shooting appeared to be an act of self-defense. The shooter was released without charges at that time, though the case was forwarded to the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office for final review. Police continued to search for the additional suspects who fled the area, but no further arrests were immediately reported in connection with the robbery attempt.
