On the evening of August 13, 2022, in East Chicago, Indiana, the life of 27-year-old Josue Anaya, a male resident of the city, was cut short by gunfire. The incident unfolded as a chaotic scene of violence that left one man dead and another critically wounded.
Reports from that night detail that police were called to the area of 140th and Alder Street after receiving calls about shots being fired and a subsequent car crash.
Upon their arrival, officers discovered a vehicle that had crashed at the intersection. Inside, they found 18-year-old Rafael A. Anaya of Hobart, suffering from a gunshot wound to his neck. He was rushed to St. Catherine's Hospital and later airlifted to a Chicago-area hospital in critical condition.
About a block away from the crash site, at a Mobil gas station on Columbus Drive, another victim of the shooting was found. This was Josue Anaya. He had sustained a single gunshot wound to his left armpit. He was transported to St. Catherine's Hospital, but his injury proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead by the emergency room physician.
At the time of his death, Josue Anaya was out on bond for a 2020 murder case in East Chicago and was scheduled to stand trial in October of that year. While authorities have noted this fact, it remains unknown if there is any connection between his pending legal case and his homicide. The East Chicago Police Department's Criminal Investigation Division is handling the ongoing investigation. To date, no suspects have been publicly identified, and no arrests have been made in the shooting death of Josue Anaya. Authorities have encouraged anyone with information to come forward and contact detectives.
