In the late summer of 2014, the life of 31-year-old Martell Roynell Tillotson was cut short on the streets of East Chicago, Indiana. On September 22, he was fatally shot, becoming another victim of gun violence. His death left a void in the lives of those who knew him, a man described as a funny and caring individual, a great father, and a loyal friend who would give the shirt off his back to help someone in need.
The investigation into his murder has been met with a frustrating silence.
To this day, no arrests have been made in connection with his shooting, and no suspects have been publicly identified by law enforcement. The case has grown cold, leaving his family and community grappling with the unanswered questions surrounding his untimely demise. Adding a layer of complexity to his story, just before his death, Tillotson had been involved in a legal battle with the city of East Chicago. In 2013, he filed a lawsuit against a police officer and the city, alleging that the officer had used excessive force and wrongfully arrested him during an incident in 2012. A video of the encounter reportedly showed the officer using profane language and threatening behavior. Though the city maintained the lawsuit was frivolous, a settlement was reached with Tillotson's family in September 2014, tragically close to the time of his murder. The charge of misdemeanor disorderly conduct against him stemming from that incident had been dismissed in April 2014.
