In the fading light of a November afternoon, a burst of rapid gunfire shattered the downtown clamor of East Chicago, Indiana, leaving two young men dead and a community in shock. On Friday, November 26, 2021, 24-year-old Bashair Woods, a resident of Chicago, Illinois, was fatally shot in what police described as a targeted attack. The incident, which also claimed the life of 23-year-old Antoine R. Moore Jr.
of East Chicago, unfolded around 4:00 PM near the intersection of 139th and Main Street.
Woods and Moore were reportedly making a rap video in or around their Jeep when they were ambushed by three men. The brazen daytime shooting sent shockwaves through the busy downtown street, which was filled with shoppers and pedestrians. Investigators found a chaotic scene, with more than 50 evidence markers scattered around the victims' vehicle. The city's shot spotter technology registered at least 23 rapid-fire gunshots, a number so high the system struggled to provide an exact count. Woods was pronounced deceased at the scene, while Moore was transported to St. Catherine Hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
Despite the public nature of the attack, which was captured on multiple city and business surveillance cameras, the assailants managed to flee. The East Chicago Police Department launched an extensive investigation into the double homicide, canvassing for witnesses and analyzing the collected footage in an effort to piece together the events that led to the deadly encounter. However, the investigation has not yet led to the identification or apprehension of the three suspects involved in the ambush. To date, no arrests have been made in connection with the murders of Bashair Woods and Antoine Moore, leaving their families and the community awaiting justice.
