Sheriff's deputies and Hope Police officers discovered Jesse Bragg inside the home, suffering from a gunshot wound to his chest. Despite immediate medical attention, his injuries proved fatal, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. The community was left in shock, mourning the loss of a young man described as having a big heart and a bright smile. In a poignant tribute, the Town of Hope, where Jesse's father served as a town councilman, lowered its flags to half-staff.
The investigation into the shooting quickly led to an arrest. Detectives from the Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Office and the Columbus Police Department identified Joseph T. Kidwell, an 18-year-old from Fowler, Indiana, as the individual responsible for the shooting.
