Rodney E. Hays, a 73-year-old resident of Mitchell, Indiana, was found dead on December 20, 2022, outside the home he shared with his son, Shawn Hays. The discovery was made following a welfare check requested by a 911 caller. When Lawrence County Sheriff's deputies arrived at the scene, they encountered Shawn Hays attempting to leave in a pickup truck.
