In the late summer of 1928, the city of Alexandria, Virginia, was rocked by the violent death of one of its own. Sergeant Elton B. Hummer, a 30-year-old male officer of the Alexandria Police Department, was shot and killed on August 18, 1928. At the time of his death, Hummer had been with the police force for just a year, having joined on August 17, 1927.
