Private August Perault Pierce, a 32-year-old officer with the Alexandria Police Department, tragically lost his life on September 7, 1930. Pierce had only been with the department for nine months, having previously served in the U.S. Navy. On the night of his death, he was patrolling the Alexandria-Washington Highway, now known as U.S. Route 1, in search of a robbery suspect who had been involved in multiple hold-ups that evening.
