In a tragic and violent outburst on February 28, 1973, in Fairfax, Virginia, 21-year-old Delores S. McMillan was shot and killed. Her life was cut short by her estranged husband, 36-year-old Harry McMillan, who was responsible for a brutal murder-suicide that left two other family members dead.
The horrific events unfolded at a rented cabin on Lee Highway, where Harry McMillan turned a gun on his own family. Along with Delores, he also fatally shot his 53-year-old mother-in-law, Ruth M.
Sherman, and his own two-year-old son, William McMillan. After committing these heinous acts, Harry McMillan then took his own life.
The young boy, William, was transported to Fairfax Hospital but ultimately succumbed to his injuries. As the perpetrator died by suicide at the scene, there were no arrests made in connection with the deaths of Delores, her mother, and her son. The incident was one of 18 homicides recorded in Fairfax County that year.
