Dennis M. Smedley, a 28-year-old police sergeant from Front Royal, Virginia, was tragically murdered on September 20, 1983. On that fateful morning, Smedley was ambushed as he was leaving his home to head to work. As he approached his truck, parked curbside on Sixth Street, an assailant crossed the street and shot him multiple times in the back. Smedley was rushed to Warren Memorial Hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries before reaching the operating room.
