On the evening of June 27, 1985, a male named Clyde Jenkins, a 72-year-old grocer in Hampton, Virginia, was nearing the end of his workday at Bon's Supermarket. The quiet closing routine was shattered at approximately 10 p.m. when a man, later identified as Herman Charles Barnes, accosted a store employee who was sweeping the parking lot. Brandishing a pistol, Barnes forced the employee back inside the supermarket, using him as a human shield.
