In the quiet community of Hartfield, Virginia, the lives of James B. "JB" Wiseman, a 32-year-old male, and his wife Kathy, also 32, were brought to a tragic and violent end on November 10, 1990. The couple was discovered in their home in the Piankatank Shores subdivision, both having been killed by close-range shotgun blasts while they slept. This brutal act marked the first murder in Middlesex County since 1987, shaking the community to its core as friends and neighbors struggled to comprehend
the senseless violence.
The initial shock gave way to a chilling revelation as the investigation unfolded. The masterminds behind the double homicide were not strangers who had invaded the Wiseman home, but their own 14-year-old daughter, Jessica Wiseman, and her 17-year-old boyfriend, Douglas Christopher Thomas. The motive stemmed from the parents' disapproval of their daughter's intense relationship with Thomas. Determined to eliminate this obstacle, the teenage couple devised a plan to murder them. A few days before the killings, Jessica had inquired if Thomas had enough bullets, and they arranged a time for him to come to the house.
On the night of the murders, following their plan, Thomas entered the Wiseman home through a window Jessica had left open. He proceeded to the master bedroom where he shot both JB and Kathy Wiseman. After the initial shots, a grievously wounded Kathy managed to stumble down the hall to her daughter's bedroom. There, Jessica reportedly urged Thomas to shoot her mother again, a request he fulfilled, ending her life. To complete their ruse, Jessica then ran to a neighbor's house in a feigned panic, claiming someone had shot her parents.
The investigation quickly unraveled their plot, leading to the arrests of both teenagers. Douglas Christopher Thomas confessed to the murders later that same day. He pleaded guilty to the first-degree murder of James B. Wiseman and was found guilty by a jury of the capital murder of Kathy Wiseman. He was sentenced to death. Due to her age at the time of the crime, Jessica Wiseman could not be tried as an adult in Virginia. She was convicted of two counts of first-degree murder in juvenile court and was ordered to be confined in a juvenile facility until her 21st birthday. She was released in 1997. Douglas Christopher Thomas was executed by lethal injection on January 10, 2000.
