On a Sunday evening in Portsmouth, Virginia, 44-year-old Danyelle Akoya Lee was shot and subsequently succumbed to his injuries on October 20, 2024. The incident, which left two other men injured, unfolded in the 2300 block of Jefferson Street around 5:30 p.m. While one victim was found at the scene by responding officers, Lee and another wounded individual were transported to a local hospital by private means.
It was at the hospital that Lee ultimately died from his wounds.
The investigation into the triple shooting suggested the violence erupted over a dice game. Surveillance footage reportedly captured a car approaching the location where three men were playing, with a passenger hanging out of the window and firing a 9-millimeter weapon indiscriminately into the group. This act of violence cut short the life of Danyelle Akoya Lee, a man who was a father.
In the days that followed, the Portsmouth Police Department made arrests in connection with the homicide. The first suspect taken into custody was 19-year-old Torian Jamari Sexton, who was arrested just two days after the shooting. Sexton was charged with first-degree murder, two counts of aggravated malicious wounding, and several firearm-related offenses. He is being held without bond. A second suspect, 27-year-old Jamel Raiquon Jones, was arrested on November 12, 2024. He faces the same charges as Sexton, including first-degree murder.
The legal proceedings for the two men charged in Lee's death have begun. In April 2025, a judge granted bond to Jamel Raiquon Jones, who is alleged to have been the driver of the vehicle involved in the shooting. The prosecution indicated that the primary evidence against Jones was the statement of his co-defendant, Torian Sexton, who is accused of being the shooter. Both men are scheduled for future court appearances to face the charges related to the death of Danyelle Akoya Lee.
