In a tragic turn of events, 15-year-old Anthony Brown, a male from New York City, lost his life in Richmond, Virginia, on November 20, 1991. His death was the culmination of a planned robbery that escalated to murder. Brown had traveled to Richmond carrying drugs, a fact that set in motion the fatal encounter.
Upon his arrival, he was met by Tina Poindexter, who was aware of the drugs Brown was transporting.
Poindexter had informed Kevin DeWayne Cardwell about Brown's arrival and his illicit cargo. This information led Cardwell to conspire with Jermaine Jones, Richard Claiborne, and Craig Coles to rob the young man. Their initial ambush at Poindexter's car, where they stole Brown's duffle bag and shoes, proved fruitless as they did not find the drugs they were after.
Undeterred, the group devised a second plan. Poindexter later revealed to Cardwell that Brown still had the drugs in his possession. Under Cardwell's direction, Poindexter lured Brown to an apartment with the false promise of helping him retrieve his stolen belongings. It was there that the situation turned deadly. Cardwell, armed with two pistols, one of which was operable, was involved in the shooting that ended Anthony Brown's life.

During the legal proceedings that followed, Richard Claiborne's testimony was instrumental in securing a conviction against Kevin DeWayne Cardwell for capital murder.
