On the cold evening of February 1, 1992, in Richmond, Virginia, a violent encounter cut short the life of 26-year-old Torrick L. Brown. Inside an apartment, a brutal altercation escalated, resulting in Brown being shot in the upper body. The violence of that night also left his sister, Martha McCoy, critically injured with multiple gunshot wounds to her stomach and arms.
The investigation into the death of Torrick Brown and the assault on his sister pointed to a planned and ruthless
attack. Reports from the time indicate that three individuals, identified as James Henry Roane Jr., Cory Johnson, and another accomplice named Thomas, arrived at the apartment. After knocking on the door and asking for Brown, they unleashed a barrage of bullets from semi-automatic weapons when he appeared. In the aftermath, Roane was also charged with the attempted murder of McCoy's 7-year-old son.
The ensuing legal process brought both Roane and Johnson to face a series of serious charges, including murder and attempted murder, for their roles in the violent episode that resulted in one death and severe injuries to another.
