In the early morning hours of September 10, 2017, the Gilpin Court neighborhood in Richmond, Virginia, was shattered by a burst of violence that left four people dead, including 26-year-old Marvin Christopher Eley, a Black male. Eley, known to some as "Pee Wee," was found with gunshot wounds at 5:40 a.m. in the 100 block of West Federal Street and was pronounced dead at the scene.
His body was discovered outside his apartment, though police believe he was shot about two blocks away in the 1200 block of St. James Street.
Less than an hour before Eley was found, at approximately 4:26 a.m., Richmond police had been called to the 1200 block of St. Paul Street for a report of gunfire. Inside an apartment, they discovered the bodies of three other individuals: Aaron Robinson, 50, Cynthia K. Williams, 26, and Jenelle Smith, 26. All three had been fatally shot. The close timing and proximity of the incidents immediately suggested a connection.
In the aftermath, as the community grieved, details emerged from the police investigation. Authorities identified Marvin Eley as the person responsible for the triple homicide of Robinson, Williams, and Smith. The Richmond Police Department, after consulting with the Commonwealth Attorney's Office, announced that they had exceptionally cleared the triple homicide case due to Eley's death.
Despite identifying Eley as the perpetrator in the initial shooting, the circumstances surrounding his own death remain an open investigation. No arrests have been made in connection with Eley's homicide, and the motive behind the tragic sequence of events remains unknown. The case left many questions unanswered for the families of all involved and the wider Richmond community. Eley's stepsister remembered him as someone who, despite having problems, was the kind of person who would "give you the shirt off his back" and who "took care of his family."
