On a Thursday evening in Richmond, Virginia, on November 11, 2021, the life of 18-year-old Daveon Amari Elliot was cut short by gun violence. Elliot, a Black male, was fatally shot in the Westover neighborhood of the city. He was taken to Chippenham Hospital, but tragically succumbed to his injuries.
Initial investigations by the Richmond Police Department sought to uncover the circumstances that led to the shooting.
It was later determined that Elliot died while attempting a drive-by shooting on Malachi Mann, a friend of Shawn Jackson. Mann shot and killed Elliot in what authorities ultimately ruled as a justifiable homicide. As a result, no charges were filed against Mann in connection with Elliot's death.
The story, however, did not end there. The justifiable homicide ruling fueled a desire for retaliation. On June 6, 2023, following a Huguenot High School graduation ceremony at the Altria Theater, Shawn Jackson and his stepfather were shot and killed. The shooter was identified as Amari Pollard, a friend of Daveon Elliot. Pollard was arrested and subsequently charged with two counts of second-degree murder. Prosecutors and police theorized that the graduation shooting was a direct retaliation for the killing of Daveon Elliot two years prior. In February 2024, Amari Pollard pleaded guilty to the first-degree murder of Shawn Jackson.
