In the late hours of a Monday evening in Richmond, Virginia, the life of 33-year-old Omar T. Green was tragically cut short. On June 17, 2019, while outside the North Avenue Food Market and Deli, a place familiar to the neighborhood, Omar was shot. Richmond Police received a call about the shooting just before 11 p.m. and rushed to the 2300 block of North Avenue. There, in the parking lot, they found Omar suffering from a life-threatening gunshot wound.
He was quickly taken to a local hospital, but the injury proved to be fatal, and he succumbed to it later that night. His death marked the 27th homicide in the city that year.
Omar, a Black male, was remembered by his mother, Sheila Hall, as a humble and family-oriented man who would do anything for anyone. Despite a battle with diabetes that affected his mobility, he was known for his positive outlook and constant smile. At the time of the incident, it was reported that he was engaged in a conversation with a woman when he was shot in the back. The sudden violence left his family, including his mother, devastated and searching for answers that have yet to come. His mother has spoken of her profound grief and the life sentence of sorrow imposed upon her by the person who took her son.
The investigation into Omar Green's murder remains ongoing, but answers have been elusive. Immediately after the shooting, a male suspect was seen running from the area. The only description available was that he was wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt and dark pants. In the years that have followed, no arrests have been made, and authorities have acknowledged a lack of leads in the case. The Richmond Police Department has repeatedly asked for the public's help, urging anyone with information to come forward and contact Crime Stoppers, leaving a family to continue their wait for justice.
