In the winter of 2017, the life of 18-year-old Amir Mohammed Dermoumi, a Black / African American male, was tragically cut short on the streets of Portsmouth, Virginia. On the evening of January 15th, Dermoumi was a passenger in a car near the intersection of Truxton Avenue and Portsmouth Boulevard when shots were fired into the vehicle. He was struck in the upper body by the gunfire.
The driver of the car sped away from the scene in an attempt to escape the violence, but in the ensuing chaos, crashed into two parked cars just a few blocks away. When authorities arrived, they found Dermoumi, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Another individual in the car sustained injuries during the incident.
The investigation into the shooting led Portsmouth police to a 17-year-old suspect named Shawn Griffin. Griffin was subsequently arrested and faced serious charges, including murder and related gun offenses, in connection with Dermoumi's death. As the case proceeded to a preliminary hearing, a teenage girl provided key testimony. She told the court that she had witnessed the shooting while sitting in her own car after leaving a party. The witness identified Griffin as the shooter, stating that she recognized him from his Facebook profile and a distinctive jacket he was wearing at the time of the incident.
Despite the eyewitness testimony, the case took an unexpected turn. The prosecutor, Deputy Commonwealth's Attorney Artisha Gregg, made the decision to request that all charges against Shawn Griffin be dropped. The request was granted by a Circuit Judge, though the possibility of refiling the charges in the future was left open. This decision was reportedly made to ensure a successful prosecution could be mounted at a later time, highlighting potential challenges with the case. While the murder charges were dismissed, Griffin was not released from custody as he was still facing a probation violation hearing. The tragic death of Amir Dermoumi, a student at Regent University who was remembered by his family as a hardworking and dedicated young man, left a void in the community, with the path to justice taking a complicated and unresolved turn.
