In the early hours of a spring Sunday in Flint, Michigan, a devoted father's life was cut short in a violent encounter. Jason Andrew Missentzis, a 37-year-old White / Caucasian male from Montrose, was shot and killed on May 10, 2015. Known for his industrious nature and love for the outdoors, sports, and art, Missentzis was a father of two who was actively involved in his children's lives, even coaching their youth sports teams.
His death left a void in his family and community, who remembered him for his bright smile and great sense of humor.
The investigation into the shooting, which occurred around 2:40 a.m. in the 5200 block of Saginaw Street, quickly led authorities to a suspect. Investigators determined that Missentzis had been lured to the location for a drug deal that had been arranged through Facebook. The man behind the scheme was identified as 28-year-old Anthony Montez Kennedy. When detectives tracked Kennedy to a residence in the Tudor Estates Mobile Home park, a standoff ensued. For approximately four hours, crisis negotiators and the Michigan State Police Support Team worked to convince Kennedy to surrender. The tense situation concluded peacefully with Kennedy's surrender.
Following his arrest, Anthony Montez Kennedy was charged with felony murder, armed robbery, using a computer to commit a crime, and felony firearm charges. Ultimately, Kennedy entered a plea and was convicted of second-degree murder for the death of Jason Andrew Missentzis. On January 26, 2017, he was sentenced to a minimum of 25 years and a maximum of 50 years in prison. He is currently incarcerated at the Ionia Correctional Facility, with his earliest possible release date in May 2040.
