On May 1, 2020, Calvin Munerlyn, a 43-year-old security guard, was working at a Family Dollar store in Flint, Michigan. What began as a routine day took a tragic turn when he enforced the state's mandatory mask policy, a measure put in place during the COVID-19 pandemic. A verbal altercation ensued when Sharmel Teague and her daughter, Brya Bishop, were told they needed to wear face coverings to be inside the store. Munerlyn refused service to Teague's daughter because she was not wearing a mask. This led to Teague yelling and spitting at Munerlyn before leaving the premises.
Approximately 20 minutes after the initial confrontation, Teague returned to the Family Dollar, but this time she was not alone. She was accompanied by her husband, Larry Teague, and her son, Ramonyea Bishop. The two men confronted Munerlyn, with Larry Teague reportedly yelling at him for disrespecting his wife. During this confrontation, Ramonyea Bishop fatally shot Munerlyn in the back of the head. Munerlyn was found unconscious and bleeding and was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.
The investigation that followed led to the identification of Sharmel Teague, Larry Teague, and Ramonyea Bishop as the primary suspects. Sharmel Teague was taken into custody, while a search was launched for her husband and son, who were considered armed and dangerous. Larry Teague and Ramonyea Bishop were apprehended about a week later, with Bishop found in Bay City, Michigan, and Teague located in Houston, Texas. All three were charged with first-degree premeditated murder and felony firearm charges. Brya Bishop also faced charges of tampering with evidence, lying to a peace officer, and being an accessory after the fact; she later pleaded no contest and received a sentence of time served and probation.
Following a trial, a jury found Sharmel Teague, Larry Teague, and Ramonyea Bishop guilty of first-degree premeditated murder. In January 2023, all three were sentenced to a mandatory term of life in prison without the possibility of parole.
