On a Thursday evening in Flint, Michigan, a heated argument outside of a liquor store escalated into a tragic and fatal encounter for two men. The incident, which unfolded on September 14, 2023, at Royal Liquor on South Center Road, resulted in the death of 51-year-old Jabbar Brooks, a Black/African American male. Brooks, who was originally from Greenville, Mississippi, had been living in Flint.
The altercation began as a dispute between Brooks and 21-year-old Johnny Brown VI.
The argument intensified to a critical point when Brooks produced a firearm and shot Brown, inflicting a fatal wound. In the immediate aftermath of the initial shooting, a bystander who witnessed the event intervened, managing to take the firearm from Brooks.
As Brooks attempted to reclaim his weapon, the situation took another turn. The bystander, now in possession of the gun, shot Brooks, who was then killed. Law enforcement officials investigated the complex series of events and later made a determination regarding the bystander's actions. After a review of the incident, authorities concluded that the bystander had acted in a manner that constituted a justifiable homicide.
As a result of this finding, no charges were filed against the individual who shot and killed Jabbar Brooks. The case was considered solved, with the deaths of both Jabbar Brooks and Johnny Brown VI stemming from the initial violent confrontation. Funeral services for Brooks were later held on September 30, 2023, at Shady Grove Church in his former hometown of Greenville, Mississippi.
