In the fall of 1994, a tragic event unfolded in Richmond, Virginia, forever altering the lives of one family. James Nathaniel Randolph Jr., a 34-year-old Black man, was killed on October 14, 1994, in a brutal mass murder that claimed the lives of four other members of his family. The devastating incident took place in the Gilpin Court public housing complex.
The perpetrator was 21-year-old Christopher C. Goins, the boyfriend of Randolph's stepdaughter, 14-year-old Tamika Jones.
On that fateful morning, Goins, reportedly angry and upset, went to the family's home and carried out the horrific act. Tamika was seven months pregnant with Goins's child and had recently been hospitalized due to pregnancy complications.
Goins used a. 45-caliber handgun to shoot and kill James Nathaniel Randolph Jr., his 29-year-old partner Daphne Jones, and three of her other children: 9-year-old Nicole, 4-year-old David, and 3-year-old Robert. All of the victims were shot in the head at close range. Tamika Jones was also shot nine times but miraculously survived the attack; however, she lost her unborn child.
Following the horrific crime, Christopher C. Goins was arrested and stood trial. He was ultimately convicted of capital murder, four counts of first-degree murder, two counts of attempted murder, and multiple weapons charges. For the first-degree murder convictions, he received four life sentences. Additionally, the jury sentenced him to death for the capital murder conviction, citing both 'future dangerousness' and the 'vileness' of the crime.
