On January 25, 2024, at approximately 7:15 p.m., Richmond Police responded to reports of gunfire in the 100 block of West Federal Street in the Gilpin Court neighborhood. Upon arrival, officers discovered 43-year-old James Champion IV in a stairwell, suffering from a gunshot wound; he was pronounced dead at the scene.
