On a tragic day in May of 1996, Quincy Bernard Brown, a 37-year-old Petty Officer First Class in the U.S. Navy, was found deceased in a Virginia Beach apartment. Initially, the incident was presented by Eddie Makdessi, the husband of the apartment's resident, as a heroic act of defending his wife from an intruder. Makdessi claimed he arrived home to find Brown stabbing his wife, Elise Makdessi, and that he subsequently shot Brown in her defense. This narrative, however, would unravel under the scrutiny of investigators, revealing a far more sinister plot.
As the Virginia Beach police delved into the case, the initial account provided by Eddie Makdessi began to crumble. Forensic evidence did not support his version of events. Instead, a chilling story of premeditated murder for financial gain emerged. Investigators discovered that just a month prior to the killings, Eddie Makdessi had taken out a $700,000 life insurance policy on his wife, Elise. It became clear that Quincy Brown was tragically lured to the Makdessi's home under false pretenses, an unwitting pawn in Eddie Makdessi's deadly scheme to murder his wife and collect the insurance payout. The investigation concluded that Eddie Makdessi shot Quincy Brown and then fatally stabbed his own wife, Elise.
Following the murders, Eddie Makdessi fled the United States with the life insurance money, evading justice for several years. He was eventually located and, after a lengthy process due to the lack of an extradition treaty with the country where he was found, he was returned to the U.S. to face trial. In 2006, Eddie Makdessi was convicted on two counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of his wife, Elise Makdessi, and Quincy Bernard Brown. He was sentenced to life in prison for his crimes, bringing a long-awaited resolution to the double homicide that had been masked by a web of deceit.
