In the late hours of an autumn night in Virginia Beach, a dispute that began inside the Allure nightclub tragically spilled out into the parking lot, culminating in the shooting deaths of two cousins. On October 28, 2021, 33-year-old Joseph Moore and his 38-year-old cousin, William Moore, both of Norfolk, were fatally wounded. The night's events stemmed from a prior conflict between William Moore and another man, Trayvon McCoy.
Following an altercation inside the nightclub, McCoy went to
his vehicle and retrieved a rifle. He then confronted William Moore in the parking lot. After a brief exchange, McCoy shot William in the chest at close range. As Joseph Moore attempted to flee the scene, he was shot in the back. Despite the efforts of bystanders who attempted to render first aid, both Joseph and William succumbed to their injuries at the location.
Law enforcement identified McCoy as the shooter through surveillance footage and witness accounts. The following day, he was apprehended by a SWAT team at a Hampton Inn in Virginia Beach, located just a couple of miles from the nightclub. During the subsequent investigation, McCoy admitted to the shootings but claimed he had acted in self-defense, though he did not see any weapons on the victims.
In September 2023, a jury convicted Trayvon McCoy of aggravated murder, first-degree murder, and two counts of using a firearm in the commission of a felony. The prosecution argued that McCoy had the option to leave the scene rather than escalating the conflict to deadly violence. McCoy received a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole, with an additional 43 years.
