On the evening of March 15, 2001, Daniel Robert 'Danny' Petrole, a 21-year-old male, was shot and killed in his car outside of his townhouse in Bristow, Virginia. A graduate of Centreville High School and a student at Northern Virginia Community College, Petrole also worked part-time as a delivery driver for a florist. To the outside world, he appeared to be a typical young man, but the investigation into his murder would soon uncover a far more dangerous and lucrative side to his life.
The initial shock of the brutal murder of a former Secret Service agent's son quickly gave way to startling revelations. When police searched Petrole's home and vehicle, they discovered a significant drug enterprise. In his townhouse, authorities found large quantities of high-grade marijuana and ecstasy, along with guns and over $120,000 in cash. An additional $17,460 was found in the trunk of his car, and he had $965 in his wallet at the time of his death. It became clear that Petrole was a major player in a suburban drug ring, buying hundreds of thousands of dollars' worth of marijuana from a source in Seattle and distributing it throughout Northern Virginia.
The investigation into Petrole's murder led police to two of his associates in the drug trade: Justin Wolfe, then 20, and Owen Barber IV, then 21. Investigators determined that Wolfe owed Petrole a substantial amount of money, reportedly around $65,000, for marijuana that had been provided to him on credit. To eliminate this debt, Wolfe orchestrated a plan to have Petrole killed. He enlisted the help of Barber, who agreed to carry out the murder. On the night of the crime, Barber waited for Petrole to return home. As Petrole sat in his car, Barber fired ten shots from a 9mm handgun through the passenger-side window, killing him instantly.
Both Wolfe and Barber fled Virginia after the murder, with Wolfe going to Florida and Barber to California. However, they were both apprehended in April 2001. In the ensuing legal proceedings, Owen Barber pleaded guilty to his role as the triggerman and agreed to testify against Justin Wolfe. Barber's testimony was crucial in the case against Wolfe, stating that he had been hired by Wolfe to commit the murder. In exchange for his cooperation, Barber received a 38-year prison sentence. Based largely on this testimony, Justin Wolfe was convicted of capital murder and sentenced to death in June 2002. He also received an additional 33 years for drug and firearm charges.
The case took a significant turn years later when Wolfe's conviction was overturned due to prosecutorial misconduct. It was revealed that evidence that could have been used to question the credibility of Barber's testimony had been withheld from the defense. Barber himself later recanted his testimony. Despite this, in a surprising turn of events in 2016, after years of maintaining his innocence, Justin Wolfe submitted a written confession admitting his role in planning Petrole's murder. He subsequently pleaded guilty to first-degree murder, conspiracy to distribute marijuana, and a firearm charge, receiving a total sentence of 41 years in prison.
